An Entry Level Feature Phone – The Samsung S3550 Shark 3

Affordable mobiles phones are everywhere.  They pretty much define what a cut-throat competition is in the mobile phone markets, especially among the world’s top five industry leaders - Nokia, Samsung, LG, Sony-Ericsson and Motorola.  Profit margins are not as spectacular as what they can squeeze of out of upscale smartphones often costing 3-10 times more   But that’s what a wider market base is asking.  None of the functionality frills and bragging rights from cutting-edge features.  It’s not something the Big Five will overlook.

That’s what Korean mobile phone leader Samsung won’t ever do.  It recently came out with a new range of full feature phones harking back to the elegantly slim candybar and slider forms that have defined its enviable position among the big five in the industry.  This is the Shark series which Samsung is positioning as an affordable alternative and successor to its highly successfully Corby series of touchscreen handsets.

Three handsets launched the Shark line – the candybar S5350 Shark and the sliders S5550 Shark 2 and S3550 Shark 3. The third in the line, the Samsung S3550 Shark 3 is a remarkable blend of stylish simplicity and no-nonsense functionality that its feature set deserves closer inspection.  It’s not the top honcho among as its designation number might suggest, but occupies the middle position in terms of price and feature sophistication. Available only in black, this and the others in the Shark range are expected to reach the markets soon or within the first quarter of the year.  No pricing information has been officially released yet but their budget price points shouldn’t be any cause for worry.

Entry Level Features

• The Shark 3 is a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE on 2G.  It measures 95.8mm x 45.8mm x 14.4mm and weights a mere 79g, among the lightest in the market.  There’s Bluetooth 2.1 and USB 2.0 for wireless and wired data synching, respectively.
• The Samsung S3550 Shark 3 has a smallish 2-inch TFT LCD display with QVGA resolution and 256k color depth – typical of what you can find in budget handsets.  Imaging is also basic with a rudimentary 2-megapixel fixed focus camera that also takes video recording at QVGA.
• There’s the usual video and audio media players that support the popular media file codes as well as getting stereo FM with RDS.  Audio can be enhanced using its DNSe (Digital Natural Sound Engine) for stereo widening, surround and bass boost.  You can listen with wireless stereo earphones with its Bluetooth A2DP support.
• You get a modest 35 MB internal memory upgradable up to 8 GB with a microSD slot. We are confident it can take in the more common 16 GB microSD cards. Its 800 mAh lithium-ion battery when fully charged can power the handset for up to 7.5 hours of talk time and 19 days of standby time.
• There’s no GPS but its gets bundled with Google Maps.  There’s also Mobile Tracker to trace lost or stolen handsets and a basic HTML and WAP-enabled web browser without Flash video.

As a social networking phone, The Shark 3 allows instant and easy access to your favorite Facebook, Bebo and MySpace accounts.
