Boat Summer Fun

Boating for fun and relaxation is a very popular pastime for many Americans. Recreational boating has become so popular, in fact, that increasing congestion on our lakes and rivers, often presents serious hazards for the recreational boater. Boating can also be a dangerous pastime if common sense rules are not followed in the pursuit of fun and relaxation.
Common Sense Rules to Follow When Boating
- Lifejackets should be worn by everyone on board
- No alcohol on board
- Be alert to weather conditions
The most common causes of boating accidents are reckless operation, excessive speed, operator inexperience or inattention. Most boating accidents involved collisions with other watercraft. Most fatalities were drownings, with falling overboard another common mishap. Alcohol consumption was involved in over twenty-five per cent of fatal boating accidents.
Everyone on a boat should be wearing a lifejacket approved the United States Coast Guard. Hundreds of people are seriously injured or killed every year in boating accidents. Many of the injuries and deaths could have been avoided if only the victims had been wearing lifejackets.
Thunderstorms and Boating
A serious danger to boaters is the thunderstorm. Boaters are very vulnerable to storms because most recreational boating takes place in the summer months when sudden violent thunderstorms can come on you quickly. Boaters should always check the weather forecast before heading out. Technology has made avoiding dangerous thunderstorms easier with a little preparation and planning.
Boating Accidents and the Law
If you are involved in a boating accident, you must file a formal written report by law. According to that law, a boating accident is defined as a situation where someone is injured or killed, there is damage to a boat or other property or a person on board disappears. Such accidents include but are not limited to collisions, explosions, fires, capsizing, sinking or flooding and passenger disappearance. You have forty-eight hours to file a report if there were injuries in the accident, someone dies or disappears and ten days if only the boat or other property was damaged.
