Trawler Style

Brixham - Devon - has narrow streets squeezed between attractive old buildings that run down steeply to the harbour which has been the focal point of the town since the Middle Ages. It was England's major fishing port for three hundred years, and trawlers still mingle with scores of private craft.

The harbour's most eye catching feature is a full size replica of the Golden Hinde, the surprisingly small ship in which Sir Francis Drake sailed round the world in 1577-80. This replica was converted from a 1940s fishing trawler; it is moored by the Old Market house, built in 1800, which now houses the British Fisheries Museum, devoted to the history of the industry.

Nearby, a statue on the quay commemorates the landing of Prince William of Orange, the future King William III, on November 5 1688. The museum at Bolton Cross, in the centre of Brixham, has a section illustrating the history of the Coastguards.

Seaside attractions include an aquarium and an indoor swimming pool. Boat and fishing trips can be arranged, and motor boats can be hired. There is a regular ferry service across the bay to Torquay.

During the summer the town hosts the famous Cowtown carnival. It is enjoyed by visitors and locals with people of all ages coming together to party. The name Cowtown derives from the hilly area where farmers lived, whereas the coastal settlement was referred to as Fishtown.

The other local industries were mostly associated with stone. Limestone was extensively quarried and can still be seen today in the houses and breakwater. There were also limekilns used to burn the stone down to be spread on fields as a fertilizer.

In the summer many tourists base themselves in the town's hotels whilst exploring the beautiful coast as well as the magnificent Dartmoor National Park.
